Ecology

Illustrated class card for Ecology
Ages 5–12Science & Ecology

The framework for our Ecology classes is the "Creative Current" curriculum, which is a place-based, arts-integrated ecological education organization. It braids science, art, music, theatre, storytelling, movement, inquiry, stewardship, and restoration, helping children become careful observers, creative thinkers, collaborators, and caretakers of place who understand themselves as participants within living systems and communities.

We use the experiential study of the living systems around us such as soil, roots, water, weather, plants, animals, fungi and geology to understand our place in it all. Through field observation, nature journaling, mapping, experiments, art and collaborative projects, we will explore the Taos Gorge and Rio Fernando watershed while noticing how each place changes through the seasons.

The year moves from close observation into meaningful stewardship. Children will study habitats and ecological connections, visit local waterways and restoration sites, and contribute to exhibitions, planting projects and community-sharing experiences. Together, we will ask not only "How is this place alive?" but also "How can we help care for it?"
