_ Who We Are
Inspire Roots is a self-directed learning cooperative in Taos, New Mexico — where children ages 5–12+ build real academic foundations and practical life skills through hands-on, mentor-guided learning rooted in the rhythms of the natural world.
Children here craft their own educational journeys with the full support of experienced facilitators — pursuing core academics, creative arts, and land-connected projects in ways that are meaningful, rigorous, and responsive to who they are. This is not learning without structure. It is learning with the right structure — one that honors each child’s path while ensuring they grow in confidence, competence, and connection.
We support homeschooling families and those seeking thoughtful, intentional alternatives to what is currently available — with full-time, part-time, and aftercare options designed around your family’s real life.
Reciprocity is the foundation of all we do. We believe that when children are in genuine relationship with mentors, peers, and the natural world, they don’t just learn… they grow into capable, connected, purposeful people.
_ Our Mission
To empower learning through self-directed experiences rooted in nature and community. Guided by seasonal rhythms and the wisdom of the land, we create nurturing environments where children can freely explore their interests, express creativity, and grow at their own pace. Through meaningful relationships, hands-on discovery, and respect for each unique path, we support development of curiosity, confidence, and purpose while fostering connection to community, self, and the living world.
_ Our Focus
Everything at Inspire Roots grows from a deep relationship with the natural world. We believe that when children tend the earth, they tend themselves — developing the empathy, skills, and imagination needed to thrive in an ever-changing world.
Our ethos is simple: learning happens everywhere, and nature is our greatest teacher. Core skill building in Reading, Writing, Math, Science, Art, and Music happens through experiential, land-based learning.
ETHOS
When children tend the earth, they tend themselves — developing empathy, skills, and imagination to thrive in an ever-changing world.

Reading, Writing, Math, Science, Art & Music — woven through experiential, hands-on, land-based learning every day.

Nature journals, compost systems, garden parties, and more. Learning that lives beyond the classroom.
_ Five Guiding Principles
1
Self-Directed Learning
Lessons and projects led by intrinsic motivation, personal interest, and mentor support. Children are trusted to know what they need — and are fully supported every step of the way in pursuing it.
2
Creative Empowerment
Arts, music, and storytelling are central learning vehicles — not extras. Creativity is how we think, communicate, and make meaning here. Every child is an artist and a storyteller.
3
Multi-Age Mentorship
Older learners guide and support younger ones. Mixed-age groupings build leadership, empathy, and a genuine sense of belonging — the way community has always worked.
4
Sustainability & Stewardship
Eco-mindfulness, gardening, and permaculture woven into daily life. Reciprocity with the land is not a lesson plan — it is a living practice we return to every single day.
5
Community & Leadership
Shared agreements, democratic decision-making, and group projects give children real ownership of their community and their world. Leadership here is learned by living it.
Just as bees work together in harmony — the children, mentors, and families of Inspire Roots learn, grow, and create side by side. In our hive, each child’s unique spark contributes to the vitality of the whole.
_ Core Skills & Subjects
Every subject is taught through the living world around us
Nature Studies & Science
We study soil health, learn about native plants and animals, build food forests, explore water cycles, and grow permaculture gardens to understand ecosystems.
Math
We measure garden plots, plan beds, budget for projects, and build structures — using geometry, fractions, and basic accounting in real, meaningful contexts.
Reading & Writing
We journal experiences, research plants, tell land stories, read about Taos Pueblo growing methods, and create garden guides together.
Art & Music
We make nature art, paint murals, create songs about the land, and plan Garden Party performances that bring the whole community together.
History & Social Studies
We explore Taos Pueblo ways of caring for the land, local stewardship history, Taos’s rivers and mountains, and stories of people protecting the earth.
Practical Skills
We cook from the garden, use tools safely, take on leadership roles, practice communication, and manage real projects from start to finish.
Community Building
We begin each day with check-ins, hold circle discussions, make shared agreements, plan celebrations, and work on group projects that belong to all of us. This is where the cooperative comes alive.
