_ Our Approach

At Inspire Roots, we actively keep up with research on how children learn best, and we are always evolving based on the latest evidence. Over the past two decades, a steadily growing number of studies have found that self-directed and project-based approaches deepen engagement, strengthen critical thinking, and build lasting competence. That is how we landed where we are: self-directed, experiential, project-based learning guided by our hand-selected facilitators.

We have created a unique living curriculum—free of standardized tests and rigid pacing. It is not a static program locked in a binder. It grows and shifts with our community.

We actively gather input from parents (including their preferred homeschool curricula), from our facilitators, and most importantly, from the learners themselves! We also work closely with each family to understand their unique flow and rhythm at home—what works for them, what feels sustainable, and how we can support not just the child, but the whole family system. If a child wants to study something, we build a project around it. If a parent has a curriculum they love, we weave it in. If a mentor sees a spark, we follow it.

To track progress and celebrate accomplishments, we have created unique Individual Learning Plans (ILPs) for every learner. These are not grade books or test scores. They are living documents that capture each child’s strengths, emerging interests, seasonal goals, and growth across academics, social-emotional development, nature connection, and self-directed ownership. We use journals, photo documentation, facilitator observations, and seasonal reflection surveys to see how far each child has come, and we celebrate every step.

This is not learning without structure. It is learning with the right structure; one that honors each child’s path while ensuring they grow in confidence, competence, and connection. Reciprocity is the foundation of all we do. We believe that when children have a real say in their learning, when their questions, interests, and ideas are not just heard but implemented, they invest from their own will, not from obligation. That is the purpose of our living curriculum. Every voice is welcomed here, and everything we do is rooted in reciprocity: caring for each other, our community, and the living world.
